Great rig for a bargain price! This one of a kind custom conversion was built on a 1980 GMC Astro rig powered by the legendary Detroit 671 diesel engine.
Consisting of a truck and trailer, it was originally leased to movie studios for “on location” support. The 63 foot big rig served as crew quarters for two years on the set of the television series “Northern Exposure” and on location in Hope, British Columbia for the filming of Rambo – First Blood.
In the ‘90's, the rig was reconfigured, “re-skinned,” and renovated for use by the US Forestry Service as a mobile air operations base for wilderness firefighting. Until recently, it served as a remote base for pilots, flight controllers and air operations control.
Truck and trailer are equipped to be totally independent, with a big 15 Kw Nissan diesel generator (only 1000 hours TT), four roof air conditioners, dual electrical power (AC or DC), propane heat, dual fuel refrigerator (AC or propane), and giant tanks for fresh, grey and black water. All water lines are wrapped with insulation containing electrical heating elements to prevent freezing. Abundant storage throughout unit.
Typical recreation vehicles are built utilizing a wood frame over a truck chassis. This rig was built to commercial standards, using structural steel members for rigidity and strength. True to its “big rig” pedigree, the truck has dual driving wheels with good tread.
The rig was purchased and is currently registered in Montana . It was driven to Houston , Texas in July 2006 from Missoula , and has logged trips around southeast Texas since. |
